Become a Koala Crusader!
Did you know that Australia has the worst rate of mammalian extinction compared to any other country in the world? Unfortunately, the koala is fast becoming part of this statistic. The koala population is being ravaged by habitat loss and fragmentation, motor vehicle accidents, domestic pet attacks and most disturbingly, disease.
Chlamydial disease in koalas causes keratoconjunctivitis, urinary tract infection, kidney failure, infertility, pneumonia and flu-like symptoms and if not treated, causes a slow and painful death.
Koalas in the wild are also suffering from the koala retrovirus (KoRV), thought to cause leukaemia, bone marrow failure, cancers and an immunodeficieny syndrome ("Koala AIDS").

Unfortunately, research into these horrific diseases is labour intensive and costly. Wildlife Warriors and the Australian Wildlife Hospital have the expertise and the determination... all we need is the funding.
We need 6,000 generous people to donate $80
to cover the cost of research for the next two years.
Donations $80 and over will receive a limited edition Koala Crusader keyring and certificate for your generous contribution. Why not sign up your friends and family as a unique Christmas gift?
Donate today and become a Koala Crusader!

"We have the chance of saving the koala - if we do nothing, we will lose them... sooner or later."
Dr Jon Hanger, Director of Research and Ecological Services, Australian Wildlife Hospital.
Logan School Named Most Innovative Conservation Project
Mabel Park High School at Logan has been named the Most Innovative Conservation Project in the 2009 Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors Schoolyard Warriors Conservation Challenge.
The Schoolyard Warriors Conservation Challenge is a hands-on, creative and exciting program designed especially for schools to get involved in conservation.
Schools across Queensland from the Gold Coast to Mackay and as far west as Longreach, showed us how schools are making a difference to local environmental and wildlife conservation.
Mabel Park High School was among the outstanding entries received, and was chosen to receive the $2000 grant, which has been kindly donated by Australia Zoo.
Teacher Josh Culverhouse, says the students are very excited about winning the Most Innovative Conservation Project.
“It is pleasing to observe our staff and students working hardto improve our environment and actively learning about conservation of energy and resources through such an enjoyable, hands-on project,” says Josh.
“The $2000 will allow the school to continue developing the community garden” continues Josh.
“Our school is very gratefulfor the acknowledgement and reward.”
Mabel Park High School students showed how they are contributing towards environmental conservation with the development of a community garden.
The garden incorporates environmentally friendly concepts including capturing water runoff, planting only native trees, shrubs and grasses, developing a frog pond, mulching from recycled materials like newspaper, making use of water tanks to supply the garden, composting stations to recycle all waste, and developing a worm farm for fertilizer.
The 2009 Schoolyard Warriors Conservation Challenge also incorporated a Steve Irwin Day (15 November) fundraising activity where schools were asked to participate in a day of fundraising for global wildlife conservation.
Pimpama State School was named Highest Fundraising School in the 2009 challenge, raising money that will go towards wildlife conservation, and in particular, the Australian Wildlife Hospital located at Beerwah.
The Most Innovative Conservation Project: Mabel Park High School – their project was holistic in nature, combining a permaculture garden, which the students built from scratch, and connecting and involving the students to the natural production of food.
The Runner-Up Most Innovative Conservation Project: Nashville State School – this project also combined permaculture gardens, which was also included in the school curriculum.
The Highest Fundraising School: Pimpama State School – this school’s idea to raise money was by far the most original. The school came up with the concept of ‘Hug a Guinea Pig’ to raise funds for wildlife conservation.
The Runner-Up Highest Fundraising School: Mabel Park High School – connecting their conservation project to their fundraising, the school sold produce to teachers and the community, supporting a healthy way of life for both the students and whole school community.
Special mentions:
- Blackall Range Independent School
- Tannum Sands State High School
- Victory College
Details of the 2010 Schoolyard Warriors Conservation Challenge will be announced online shortly.

Black and White Day
Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors celebrated Black and White Day on Saturday 16 May at Australia Zoo. As part of Black and White Day celebrations, we raised a total of $8,400 for Tasmanian devil conservation!
This is a huge result and thank you to all who participated to help raise awareness and funds for the plight of the Tasmanian devil. This money will be directed towards research for a cure and helping to establish insurance populations in the hope of saving this iconic Australian animal.
About Black and White Day
Black and White Day was founded by Nature Nic, a 10 year old boy from Hobart, Tasmania. Tasmanian devil’s suffer from what is known as the Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD), a deadly disease eradicating
devil’s at an alarming rate. Nature Nic created this day so he could do something to help save these unique creatures.
Currently, over 70% of Tasmania is affected by the disease and experts say that Tasmanian devils could be extinct in the wild within 10 to 20 years if nothing is done to save the species.
You can support Black and White Day every year by getting your school or business to
dress in black and white on 15 May for a gold coin donation. We rely on donations to supportthe survival of this iconic species – every little bit helps!
Make a donation or contact Australia ZooWildlife Warriors for more information about Tasmanian devil conservation.

Younger Generations Show their Support for Wildlife Conservation

Over 100 children from around the Sunshine Coast have shown their support for wildlife conservation through the Framing Australia’s Wildlife Competition for youth, raising money for Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors’ major project, the Australian Wildlife Hospital.
Children have shown inspiration through their artworks to help spread the conservation message on the Sunshine Coast, with four lucky winners receiving some awesome prizes, including a meeting with Bindi Irwin.
Murray Munro, Appeals Manager for Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors said the standard of entries received has been extraordinary.
“Younger generations on the Sunshine Coast are really getting the conservation message and the amount of entries we received has only reinforced that message.”

“We received a number of letters accompanying entries that communicated how passionate young people are about our wildlife and the environment, and their willingness to help save our wildlife.”
“We even received an entry all the way from Florida in the USA! The message is certainly being spread far and wide.”
Last Wednesday, local celebrity Jamie Dunn, local impressionist artist Chris Postle, and a representative from Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors sifted through the entries to determine the winner in each category.
The winners in each category are:

- Victoria Lawrence (Noosa Heads) for her entry “Frill Neck Lizard” (4-7 years category)
- Jai O’Hara (Cooroy) for his entry “Sun Baking Coastal Bearded Dragon” (8-10 years category)
- Megan Thompson (Buderim) for her entry “Proud Pelican” (11-13 years category)
- Chloe Henshaw (Buderim) for her entry “Trio of Rosellas” (14-17 years category)
The competition was run in conjunction by Complete Framing’s Noosa and Maroochydore studios and Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors. The competition was supported by WIN, Zinc FM, Sunshine Coast Daily, Greenprint and Australia Zoo.
Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors would like to thank each and every entrant for helping us to raise funds for the Australian Wildlife Hospital, and for being so compassionate towards the welfare of our wildlife!

Running to Save the Tasmanian Devil from Extinction

The London Marathon is the biggest charity run in the world! Participants from all corners of the globe take part to raise money for their favourite charity, and to bring awareness to a cause close to their heart.
In the 2008 London Marathon, Bruce (pictured right) and Maureen Englefield from East Coast Natureworld and the Devil Islanders team (pictured below) ran to raise money for the Devil Island Project Inc Tasmania. Money raised went towards saving the Tasmanian Devil from a deadly cancer that is decimating the species. Australia Zoo and Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors have also given support to this important project.
At 65 years of age, Bruce said it was a big ask running 42.2kms or 26miles 385 yards! However the team made it, proudly carrying the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors logo on their backs through the streets of London. They raised the $150,000 needed to build the first sanctuary, which opened in May 2008.

Bruce is calling upon YOU to participate in the 2009 London Marathon on 26 April 2009, to help raise funds for the plight of the Tasmanian Devil which is now listed as a threatened species. It could become extinct in the wild in ten to twenty years.
If you are keen to take part in the world’s largest marathon event and raise money for the Devil Island Project, please email bruce.englefield@westnet.com.au or phone East Coast Natureworld on (03) 6375 1311.

No school! Cheetah rule!
Crikey! The July school holidays at Australia Zoo went off with a bang this year, with the launch of Cheetah Week and more activities than you could poke a stick at including face painting, kids rides and crafts activities.
Over the two weeks we raised much needed funds for Cheetah conservation, auctioning off a framed photo of the Irwin’s signed by Terri and Bindi with some cheeky Cheetah pug prints as well as the opportunity to go for a walk around Australia Zoo with one of our gorgeous Cheetah!
Sandwizard, who brought sand art to Australia Zoo and provided awesome fun for kids of all ages, raised a whopping $925 for Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors. Tracey French, owner and operator of Sandwizard is pictured with Australia Zoo's Amanda French and the money they raised for Cheetah conservation.
This amount of money does so much for our beautiful Cheetah. With the funds Sandwizard raised, this could provide veterinary costs for 13 injured Cheetah in South Africa! This is an awesome effort, thanks Sandwizard! For more information on Cheetah conservation, click here.

Over $1700 was raised for Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors from a raffle held during the promotion. This money will be contributed towards our conservation projects within Australia and overseas.
The Club is proud to be instigating their own “Green Program” with everything from toner cartridge recycling and soy based inks to waste management and water efficiency programs is in place to help reduce their carbon footprint.
“We believe the Club is every bit as responsible as the next person in reducing our carbon footprint – and if our members benefit in the process, that’s great too!” Secretary-Manager, Chris Sartori (pictured) commented.
Thanks for making a difference. Wooo-hoo!
Cheetah Week

During Cheetah Week celebrations at Australia Zoo recently, Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors handed a total of $30,000 to Cheetah Outreach and the De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Trust for ongoing efforts in Cheetah conservation.
Cheetah presentations, live auctions and other spotty activities all took place in aid of raising funds for this significant project to ensure Cheetah are saved in South Africa.
Business owners Lauren and Myron who own Enviro Site and Civil, one of Queensland’s largest demolition company’s, were the highest bidders of one of the live Cheetah auctions, which included a limited edition framed Cheetah print and signed photograph of Terri, Bindi and Robert Irwin, and to accompany the Cheetah on their daily walk around Australia Zoo.
Lauren and Myron bid a whopping $1025 for this opportunity, with all proceeds going towards Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors Cheetah conservation project!
“To know that we are helping to preserve the life of an animal, especially one as beautiful as a Cheetah, really helps you to realise that there is so much more to life than just ourselves,” says Lauren.
Pictured is Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors' Murray Munro with Lauren and Myron and their two children Anwen and Joshua.
Cheetah at Kung Fu Panda!

On 21 June, two of Australia Zoo’s cheeky Cheetah made their way to the Birch Carroll and Coyle Sunshine Plaza Cinemas, Maroochydore to raise awareness and much needed funds for the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors Cheetah conservation project.
Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors plays an active role in the fight to save the Cheetah from extinction. Through Australia Zoo Cheetah Guest Walks and donations, Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors supports the De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Trust and Cheetah Outreach in South Africa by providing funds to relocate and track the cheetah and sponsor the Anatolian Shepherd Program.
Over 200 people attended the cinema event which included a demonstration from our Australia Zoo Cheetah, presentation by Adam Cox from Channel TEN’s Totally Wild (pictured), and an advanced screening of the latest blockbuster movie Kung Fu Panda.
All proceeds raised went towards Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors Cheetah conservation project. This is a great result to help us continue to save the Cheetah from extinction!
